Single Tooth Replacement
Having a missing tooth in your mouth can create other problems for the rest of your teeth. Millions of Americans have at least one missing tooth, and about 35 million people in the United States are missing all their upper or lower teeth, according to recent data. Our goal at Salem Dental Arts is to help you with all your dental needs, including single tooth replacements.
Concerns with Missing Teeth
Missing a single tooth is a problem, not only aesthetically, but it can create other issues in your mouth. When you have a gap between your teeth because one is gone, it can shift the adjacent teeth because one of the roots is missing. The empty socket will also affect the opposite side since that tooth won't have anything to bite on. This will eventually change your bite alignment, which could bring on other orthodontic problems.
Bone resorption comes with missing teeth. It will result in additional bone loss, which will end in more missing teeth in the future due to potential gum disease and tooth decay.
People can be missing a single tooth for a variety of reasons, including trauma. We see many young patients who come in with a missing tooth after taking a blow to the face while playing sports or even roughhousing. These accidents happen daily and the teeth more commonly lost are the front teeth.
It is vital to replace any missing teeth, especially at a young age. One of the most popular options is single-tooth implants.
Dental implants are titanium rods the are placed in the jawbone and given recovery time while they fuse with the natural bone to support a crown. A connector holds the crown in place. Implants look and function like natural teeth and prevent future bone loss.
In some cases, we can place a single-tooth implant in one day, or it could take several months for the procedure to be complete. We will review your needs and determine what the best treatment for you is.
One of the requirements for dental implant surgery is that there is enough bone in the jaw to support the implant. In some cases, a procedure known as bone grafting will be needed.
Dental implants are one of the best missing teeth replacement options because the material used, titanium, is ideal to mesh with natural bone and promote the growth of more bone structure.
Other Single-Tooth Replacement Options
A dental implant is not the only option to replace a single missing tooth. There are other methods we can use to help you with this problem.
One option is a bridge placement, which is a custom-made bridge holding a new crown that is placed over the adjacent teeth to replace the missing tooth and is cemented in place. This option is less expensive than implants, and it doesn't need to be removed.
The other option you have is a partial denture, which is a replacement tooth attached to a plastic base that looks like your natural gums. They usually have a metal clasp that's connected to your natural teeth.
